Why you shouldn’t learn Modern Standard Arabic

I mistakenly spent a lot of time learning Modern Standard Arabic (MSA/Fusha); here’s what I learned.

Many language learning apps and platforms, the most popular of these being Duolingo, only teach MSA.

What’s wrong with learning MSA? Even though MSA is universally understood among Arabic speakers, the problem is that no one actually speaks the language in conversation. Even though in theory you could have a conversation in Fusha Arabic, native speakers will find it extremely odd. And while native speakers do understand you, they will speak in their dialect, which you will have trouble understanding.

MSA Arabic is also more complex compared to dialects. Too much time will be wasted learning unnecessary grammar, verb inflections, formal syntax, etc. Vocabulary is also often different, sometimes drastically.

So what should you do instead if you want to learn Arabic?

Choose a Dialect!

Which dialect should you choose then? That depends on your personal goals. Larger, more popular dialects like Egyptian Arabic are easier to find resources for.

Personally, I am studying Palestinian Arabic. I will share more about my study methods and materials in future posts.
